David H. Bennett completed his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science (1976) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and his M.S. in Fisheries Management (1968) at the University of Connecticut.  His B.S. was also earned at the University of Connecticut in Wildlife Management. His professional employment includes Assistant, Associate and Professor at the University of Idaho (1975-Present), Fisheries Biologist for the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and Research Associate for the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory of the University of Georgia.

In addition to teaching numerous fish ecology and management courses, Dr. Bennett has been awarded over $7,000,000 of grants and contracts for about 100 separate research projects.  Dr. Bennett has experience with several ecological regions of North America, and has cooperative experience with many federal, state, natural-resource agencies and private industry and consultants.

Dr. Bennett has served on numerous national committees for The American Fisheries Society, has served as Associate Editor for The North American Journal of Fisheries Management, and served on committees for the Idaho Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

Most of Bennetts research has focused on ecology and management of resident fishes and how they interact with native anadromous and resident salmonids. Much of this work has been on population ecology and identifying limiting factors.  In general, Dr. Bennett has focused on applied research problems (i.e., the application of science to management and monitoring).

Recently much of Bennetts research has been on effects of dredging and in-water disposal on aquatic biota in the Snake River reservoirs and predator-prey impacts with large salmonid predators. His research has been widely published in all of the major scientific journals and he has given numerous presentations at International, regional and state scientific meetings. Dr. Bennett has earned numerous awards for research, teaching and advising at the University of Idaho and recently was awarded the Life-Time Achievement Award by the Idaho Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.
